Brother Charles Butler was born in Colmesneil, TX, to the late Rev. C.L. and Dovearie Butler. Charles attended Scott High School in Woodville, TX. On August 14, 1969, Charles entered the U.S. Army at Ft. Bliss for training that led him to Fort Leonard in Wood, MO. After extensive training, he was stationed in Germany for six years. Later after returning to the States and serving at Fort Carson for one year, he was honorably discharged in 1976 as a Sgt. E-5. On December 13, 1977 Charles Butler was united in matrimony to Glenda Gambrell Maiden.
He attended Angelina College for a time while working for Lufkin Industries as a machinist. He was employed by the City of Lufkin for 13 years as a Waste Water Treatment Certified Operator (TWDA). While employed at this job, he attended classes at Lamar University and Texas A&M University.
